Commentary of an American ex-pat from the other side of the world, where things seemingly are backwards from what he's used to. - Nearly 30 years of work in urban, regional, and environmental policy in the public, private and non-profit sectors. Worked in Phoenix, Pittsburgh, SE Wisconsin, and now in New Zealand. I have a Masters in Urban Planning from Univ Wisconsin-Milwaukee (1979). My current job is managing a team of planners to implement Whangarei District Council's development strategies. These will have elements of smart growth, driven by environmental impact mitigation. Whangarei is in the north of the the North Island, New Zealand. US development policy can profit from the experience of other countries, if it can only get over its Not-Invented-Here mentality. My recent experience in Wisconsin was most discouraging in this regard.
